Guantanamera Restaurant

939 8th Avenue
Location: Manhattan
Tel: 212-262-5354
Website: www.guantanameranyc.com

Restaurant Description

Originally known as Azucar, or "sugar," Guantanamera is a sweet addition to Hell's Kitchen, especially for those who enjoy eating to the beat of live salsa, rumba, and cha-cha. The dining room exudes colonial Havana chic: exposed brick, candle lighting and languid, rattan-covered ceiling fans. A hand-painted folkloric mural seals the illusion; you'll even find a man hand-rolling and dispensing free stogies. Potent, minty mojitos start the fiesta. The menu is primarily Cuban, with Caribbean and Spanish specialties. It's worth ordering tostones rellenos, crispy-fried green plantains smashed to form a crown that holds tomato-sauced shrimp. Entrées are primarily roasts, stews, and grilled dishes; onions, parsley, lime, and garlic provide subtle flavor accents. While Guantanamera's cooking might not convince your demanding abuelita, the sexy and welcoming atmosphere, killer drinks, and lively tunes provide genuine escapism. This place is a party.

Well I'll have to say I didn't they would get it right but to my surprise they did! The food was exellent, and the personalized service I recieved was second to none. I called and made my reservation for my 16th wedding anniversary with some minor special details that they did to perfection. The manager was very attentive to every detail I had requested......and oh yeah did I mention the food was very good! I highly recomend if you are in the mood for some good spanish cuisine then this is the place, the music is good and the ambiance outstanding (if you like music while you eat). If you want something more intimate and private ask to be seated downstairs the lighting is very dimm....very romantic/personal. and music not loud at all.

I really think this people went to a different restaurant. The prices are very modest for a midtown restaurant. The Music is one of the best Latin bands I ever heard, with marvelous solos and the sound of the congas make you dance even if you are not a dancer. The waiters and the rest of the staff were very attentive and very funny. If you are looking for restaurant to book your party this is a place to go. You are going to have a wonderful time with a very good REAL Cuban food
